HotRIO Ecosystem: High-Performance, Low-Latency control systems with modular distributed I/Os and proprietary fibre protocol

HotRIO is a real-time control and communication system developed by Fusion for Energy (F4E) for applications requiring low latency, precise timing synchronization, and immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI). Based on 1Gb Ethernet over fiber, HotRIO integrates FPGA-based processing and modular distributed I/O, providing an efficient and scalable alternative to standard industrial control solutions.

This technology bridges the gap between PLCs and fast controllers, offering microsecond-range latency, high processing power, and compatibility with aerospace, automotive, oil & gas, pharmaceuticals, and renewable energy industries.

F4E makes HotRIO available for companies to adopt, customize, and commercialize through open-source and open-hardware mechanisms.

Technology Assets

  • HotRIO protocol: Deterministic, real-time communication over 1Gb Ethernet fiber.
  • FPGA-based hardware modules: Scalable processing power with ultra-low latency.
  • Modular distributed I/O system: Supports integration of hundreds of nodes.
  • Open-source and open-hardware availability: Companies can freely adopt, modify, and expand the technology to fit their needs.
